SCALES is a collection inspired by the materialisation of gravitation, of which the fabric of space-time is the most significant image. It explores our fantasised relationship with the outer reaches of the universe.

Each object in the series formalises a mapped representation of elements present in the universe. These elements, like black holes, have such high masses that it is difficult for us to represent them in our imagination. The formalisation of mass is translated by the presence of a foot or a bump, depending on the luminosity of the stellar object in the photograph.

The mapping was carried out by the University of Massachusetts in 2003, and the project is called 2MASS, for Two Micron All-Sky Survey. The infrared images generated by the telescope make it possible to observe stellar objects that are difficult to see in visible light, such as nebulae and brown dwarfs.

SCALES furniture is made from century-old pieces of wood. The top and legs are thick and, through the use of wood, mark an immemorial time that is beyond our understanding. The lines of time that have allowed the tree to grow can be read on the top. Once assembled, the tray is sculpted and refined. The object becomes soft and elegant. The sculpture inscribes the body's movements into the material. The sculpted object gives the impression of moving with the grain of the wood, of a matrix line that is life.

In this way, the project asks how we can see the invisible in order to reposition ourselves in the face of the grandiosity of the elements that surround us, and perhaps take a more humble and attentive look at the living beings that make up this Earth.
